I’m at the Essex County Hotel in Southend on Sea, after an epic but enjoyable 350-mile drive from Falmouth yesterday afternoon and evening. If ever a hotel did NOT live up to its web site – this is it. My fellow guests overnight are:

Who could possibly want to replace the primeval pleasure of holding a hard-back, smelling the clean crisp publication and parting those pages for the first time?
