It didn’t take much.
Just a little initiative and a “give a damn” attitude.
I arrived at the Hilton Watford at around 10.00pm last night, after a pretty crazy day even by my standards.
The last 70 miles from Petersfield in Hampshire were a struggle, maintaining my driver’s concentration on a foggy night.
I arrived absolutely dead tired and focused on just getting into my room, in bed and asleep.
I’m very sorry Mr Barrow but the computers are down and I’m unable to check you in to a room at the moment.
Capable of being a last straw – is how I read the situation.
Here I am, brain the size of a planet, working all hours, driving 39,500 miles a year and “computer says no” is telling me I cannot have a room, even though I have enough Hilton loyalty points to take over a small nation.
But then she made the difference.
I can see that you are tired. Is there anything I can get you to eat or drink whilst you wait – on the house?
My response was that I would love a cup of tea and some toast. Too late to eat anything more substantial but feeling a bit hungry.
Tea and toast – warm and comforting.
So there I sat – in reception – slightly teasy about my room – but warmed and comforted.
A critical non-essential that cost next to nothing and created a disproportionate moment of delight.
That’s all it took.
20 minutes later I was in my room and in bed, reminding myself to use Hilton wherever possible (and write a blog post).
It didn’t take much to turn me into a raving fan.
