Hygienist, Heiloo, the Netherlands
Where are you based?
I live in Heiloo in the Netherlands, that’s 4 km from the coast/Northsea and 25 km from Amsterdam, to the North.
Where did you study?
I am a dental hygienist and studied in Amsterdam, graduating in 1975. I started off working with physically and mentally retarded patients, about 7 years. I then focused on orthodontics in a hospital in Alkmaar, where I worked with periodontists and oral surgeons. After this I worked in a dental practice and then started my own practice for Oral Hygiene in 1980 in Heiloo, where I have been for the past 22 years.
How did you first hear about Chris Barrow?
Chris Barrow lectured in Amsterdam a few years ago for GSK. I was very enthusiastic because of the way he spoke. I have since kept in touch with him via LinkedIn and so found his new website.
What do you enjoy most about the dental profession?
The thing I enjoy the most is telling people how to keep their teeth and gums healthy and in a few days they notice the effect of the treatment and they can’t believe that it was so easy! I also identify high risk patients and create customised programmes for them. I rely on microbiology and other tests to help me with this, and I also help people to quit smoking. For me prevention is the core business!
